In order to allow bigger ships to dock, the Union Government has asked major ports to deepen their draughts to 18 m. Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) too proposes to deepen its draught in the second phase of dredging from the existing 14 m, for which it has decided to appoint a consultant to prepare a detailed project report (DPR). Currently, most major ports have draught of less than 10 m, which is inadequate to handle higher capacity ships that are increasingly being put to use worldwide.
