Kolkata, Chennai airports unlikely to be privatised

The aviation ministry is unlikely to award management contracts for the recently upgraded airports at Kolkata and Chennai to private operators. The costs of upgrading these airports were Rs 2,325 crore and Rs 2,015 crore, respectively.The Kolkata airport can now handle 25 mn passengers a year. Apart from the 195,000-sq-m, five-level passenger terminal building, the airport has modern taxiways and an extended runway to handle bigger jets like the Airbus A-380. The modernisation of the Chennai airport saw its annual passenger handling capacity go up to 23 mn from 9 mn.
