Kolkata port, Railways plan Sagar Island port connectivity project

Indian Railways and Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) have decided to participate in a Rs 2,000-crore rail-road connectivity project for the proposed new port at Sagar Island. The port is located approximately 80 km south of Kolkata, at the confluence of the Muri Ganga river with the Bay of Bengal. At present, the island is not connected either by road or rail. KoPT has announced its plan to build the port at an estimated cost of a Rs 3,000 crore.
Approximately 2,000 acre required for the project will be reclaimed from the sea. The port is scheduled to have an initial capacity to handle 60 mn tonne of bulk and containerised cargo.
