Plans chalked out to dredge Thengaithittu harbour

The ports department has drawn up a contingency plan to deepen the inner channel of Thengaithittu harbour, due to its movement being affected by the heavy accumulation of silt at the mouth of the sea. According to a detailed project report (DPR) submitted by the IIT-M, the Ministry of Shipping has granted Rs 440 mn under the Sagarmala programme to remove the sand from the mouth. The port department has supervised regular dredging at an estimated cost of Rs 80 mn every year.
