The Southern Railway's plan to connect Chennai with Sriperumbudur by laying a new railway line will become reality only if the state government agrees to fund at least 50 per cent of the total cost of roughly Rs 800 crore. The railways has forwarded a request to the state government to fund part of the 55 km line. The project will have to undergo four stages before construction can start. It will have to be approved by the Parliament and then the railway ministry before it is included in the budget.
