Work begins on Sikkim rail line
The construction work on the new 44.4-km-long railway line to connect northern part of West Bengal with Sikkim has been launched recently. Northeast Frontier Railway and IRCON International Ltd, a subsidiary of the Indian Railways, are executing the project. The work also envisages spanning deep gorges / valleys with bridge piers taller than the Qutab Minar. The project, estimated to cost Rs 3,300 crore, is scheduled to be completed in five years.
