Bengaluru Metro: Four new lines to enhance connectivity

01 Jun 2023

In a recent review of the Namma Metro project, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar shared thrilling updates about Bengaluru's metro system. The city is set to witness the addition of four new metro lines by November, significantly enhancing connectivity for both residents and visitors.

During his visit to the offices of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), Shivakumar engaged in discussions focused on expediting metro construction, increasing non-fare revenue, and introducing new lines. The primary objective of these discussions is to accelerate the expansion of the metro network.

Among the upcoming lines, the Baiyappanahalli-KR Pura line is particularly noteworthy, covering a distance of 2.1 km. It is expected to be operational as early as July. Another line, the Kengeri-Chellaghatta route spanning 1.9 kilometers, is anticipated to be completed by August or September. The Nagasandra-Madavara line, under construction since 2017 and covering a distance of 3 kilometers, is likely to open to the public in either September or October. Finally, the RV Road-Bommasandra line, stretching across 19.14 kilometers and connecting Electronics City, is expected to be operational in October or November. Additionally, plans are underway for a 58-kilometer Silk Board-KR Pura-Airport line, slated for completion by June 2026.

Mr. Shivakumar emphasized the significance of making the metro financially profitable, as the majority of its earnings currently go towards operational expenses. To address this concern, he proposed strategies aimed at boosting non-fare revenue, including the removal of advertisement restrictions. Furthermore, he recommended the adoption of a group captive model to reduce the metro's power bill, thereby increasing its overall profitability.
