Chennai to get second airport at Parandur

01 Aug 2022

Chennai's long wait for a second airport is coming to an end, with Parandur in Sriperumbudur picked as the site for the greenfield facility.

In response to a question from Rajya Sabha MP from Tamil Nadu Dr Kanimozhi NVN Somu, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation VK Singh stated that the state government had shortlisted Parandur as the location for the development of the greenfield airport after comparing the viability and feasibility, including the presence of habitations and industrial establishments and the land acquisition costs of both sides.

According to the Greenfield Airport Policy (2008), the state government is now obligated to submit a proposal to the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) for 'site clearance.'

Singh stated that the Tamil Nadu government officials had selected up to four areas for the building of a greenfield airport near Chennai and had asked the Airport Authority of India (AAI) to assess the sites to ensure their suitability for airport development. He stated that the AAI has determined that Pannur and Parandur were more feasible airport locations.
