Star Cement plans to expand in North-East India

Star Cement plans to expand in North-East India, as the Centre pushes for the development of infrastructure and affordable housing in the region. The company recently commissioned a grinding unit in Bengal at an investment of Rs.4.5 bn, taking its overall capacity to a little over  6 mn tonne per annum, with a clinker capacity of 2.8 mn tonne. Assam and Meghalaya are the two states where the company has a presence along with Bengal. It feels there is a potential for additional clinker capacity of around 2 mn tonne and another grinding unit of similar capacity. The cumulative investment in both projects could be around Rs.14 bn.
