Star Cement to invest Rs.4.5 bn in new West Bengal plant

Star Cement, promoted by Century Plyboards, an industry leader in the northeast, will soon expand its manufacturing footprint to Bengal, as the state government has cleared land for the firm in Jalpaiguri. The company is setting up a 2 mn tonne grinding unit, which would be its first facility in the state. It will get 45 acre for the project and will invest Rs.4.5 bn. It plans to get clinker for the plant from its facility in Meghalaya. The firm currently has a manufacturing capacity of 4 mn tonne, which would rise to 6 mn tonne after the new facility comes up. 
Bengal is seen as a market for 24-25 mn tonne of cement, while total capacity in the state is 20 mn tonne.
