Covid deepens Indian infra sector's troubles

Infrastructure projects in India already plagued by cost overruns and delays, face even deeper trouble as the COIVD-19 pandemic sweeps through 
Asia’s third-largest economy.Construction of everything from roads to ports is behind schedule by an average of 3.5 years, according to an analysis by the Statistics Ministry. Costs of 1,682 projects had shot up by a combined Rs.4 tn over their life cycle by April, as per the ministry’s latest update. This includes flagship projects such as the 3,300-km freight rail network to connect India’s eastern and western regions. The state-run Dedicated Freight Corridor Corp of India was originally scheduled to complete the work by 2016; it is now expected to be ready only by December 2021.
