After the design for the new city airport terminal T2 was cleared on July 31, airport sources said the security-after-immigration design was opted for a number of reasons. If travellers by mistake carry something in the handbag that can't be taken on board, they can give it to those who have come to drop them. If security is after immigration (like Delhi) then the traveller is completely cut off.
Also this model is being used in many new airports like Hong Kong, Seoul and the most secure airports in Israel, said an official concerned. Mumbai's peacock-shaped T2 has been built at a cost of Rs 12,000 crore and has faced a long delay due to many reasons, most crucial being encroachment on airport land.
Both Delhi and Mumbai were bid out at the same time but Delhi's T3 opened in July 2010, in time for the Commonwealth Games held that year. Mumbai, however, has been facing constant delays but on Wednesday it was spared yet another long delay.
