PM to lay foundation stone of Zojila Tunnel in J&K

01 Aug 2017

A recent report from PTI reveals that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of the Zojila tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir after August 15. On completion, the project is slated to provide all-weather connectivity between the Kashmir valley and Ladakh.

Situated at an altitude of 11,578-ft on Srinagar-Kargil-Leh National Highway, Zojila pass remains closed during winters (December to April), owing to heavy snowfall and avalanches that cut off the Leh-Ladakh region from Kashmir. IL&FS Transportation won the tender for Zojila tunnel in re-bidding, when it emerged as the lowest bidder for the Rs 4,899 crore tunnel. The completion of the tunnel, which has been a long pending demand of the locals, will flourish the Kargil like other parts of the country.
