Diamond in the mine

Anil Swarup could well be called the nitro booster for the Indian infrastructure sector - and the magic is expected to continue with his recent appointment in the Coal Ministry as Secretary. Little wonder then, that he received the Construction World Man of the Year award this year. In his 15-month stint as the head of the Project Monitoring Group (PMG), Swarup cleared 180 projects worth about Rs 6.5 lakh crore and PMG became more equipped to handle big ticket projects with maximum clearances processed online. Now, barely a month into his new appointment, Swarup has already announced the allocation of coal blocks by next February through auction. And, in his second month on the job, he hopes to etch out a strategy to double Coal India´s production. Evidently, the Coal Ministry has found itself a diamond.
