The heir apparent

When Ravi Uppal, Chief Executive and Managing Director, L&T Power, was recently inducted as a whole-time director to the company’s board; the only surprise was that the elevation came 20 months after he joined the company. An alumnus of the IIT-Delhi and IIM-Ahmedabad, Uppal has the pedigree and managerial acumen to lead L&T. He already has two significant successes in the Indian market. The well-known one is his 22-year association with ABB, where he is credited with the turnaround of the company’s business in India and the Asia Pacific region. He is also credited with bringing Volvo AB trucks and buses to India, thus ushering in a new era and concept of commercial transportation in the country. In little less than 18 months that he has been at the helm at the power division in L&T, Uppal has built an order book of Rs 30,000 crore. The power sector orders contributed 37 per cent of the company’s total order book by the end of the September and is expected to further go up to 40 per cent of total order book by the end of the year.
