Vinay Kumar Tripathi, Chairman of, Railway Board and CEO, Indian Railways, makes another record with the completion of India’s longest escape tunnel. The 12.89 km tunnel T-49 is on the 111 km under-construction Banihal-Katra railway line in Jammu and Kashmir. It is part of the prestigious Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Line (USBRL) project. The tunnel is a modified horseshoe shape. The elevation of the twin tunnel is 1,400.5 m in the south end and 1,558.84 m on the north end. The tunnel was completed despite numerous challenges such as shear zone, perched aquifer, highly jointed rock mass, and heavy ingress of water, among others, making it one for the books.
