Rail coach factory planned in Singur

01 Dec 2009

Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has mooted the idea of setting up a rail coach factory in collaboration with the West Bengal Government or on the public-private-partnership model at the abandoned Tata Motors' 1,000 acre Nano project site at Singur.

Of the 1,000 acre, the coach factory would come up on 600 acre, while the remaining 400 acre will be returned to farmers. Banerjee's Trinamool Congress had agitated against the Tata Motors' Nano project forcing the company to shift its plant to Sanand in Gujarat.

The state government is also exploring the possibility of setting up a 1,600 MW power plant with public sector firm Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd at the site.
