The railways have decided to kick-start the Station Redevelopment Scheme with the help of the public sector. While the ministry of railways is awaiting response from the private sector to develop 400 identified railway stations under the innovative Swiss Challenge method, it has decided to go ahead with the development of a few stations on its own. At least two stations, Gomtinagar in Lucknow and Bhubaneshwar in Odisha, were likely to be developed by Navratna PSU National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC). Some other stations may also be taken up to encourage the private sector to come forward and partner with railways to redevelop and modernise stations. The basic plan was to develop stations into commercial hubs along with all the amenities for passengers. The ministry had also floated a tender to hire a strategic advisor for implementation of the station redevelopment scheme.
