Plans are afoot to set up a low-cost terminal at Kolkata airport for the exclusive use of Haj pilgrims travelling to Mecca and Medina. To be located next to the quarters used by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to the south of the integrated terminal, the Haj terminal will have access via a road leading directly to it. When it is ready, the old domestic and international terminals that now serve Haj pilgrims would be demolished, paving the way for the next phase of the Kolkata airport expansion. Air India has stopped operating Haj flights to Saudi Arabia, and these are now operated by Saudia. In 2019, two lakh Indian Muslims went for Haj, of which around 9,000 were from Bengal.
