Chandigarh station upgrade project put off by another year

01 Apr 2021

The city's wait for a world-class railway station has been stretched further, as the project, approved in 2014, has been put in abeyance. This was despite the constitution of the Indian Railway Stations Development Corporation Ltd (IRSDC), a special purpose vehicle which took over the railway station in 2019. A senior railways official said that due to Covid-19 pandemic, the project has been put on hold for another year. The tenders have been called but the contractor has demanded some revisions in expenditure and availability of labour. Recently, IRSDC invited requests for proposal for leasing four vacant land parcels for mixed-use development as the part of Chandigarh railway station's redevelopment on lease rights basis up to 99 years.
