In order to avoid the Crawford market, the GPO and CSMT crossroads, and other congested areas, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is looking into the prospect of building a tunnel.
It has invited bids for the hiring of a consultant to conduct a feasibility study, write a detailed project report, and supervise the selection of a project management consultant and contractor to construct a tunnel road. According to reports, the underpass would also enable easy access to the coastal route and is predicted to reduce travel time from the current 28-30 minutes to just five minutes.
