The government is close to finalising a Rs.3.5 tn financial assistance package that would mandate state power distribution companies with high losses to either privatise operations or appoint distribution franchisees and invest in infra upgradation, reportedly said Power Minister RK Singh. The scheme will come with a gross budgetary support of Rs.1.2 tn over five years and will be result-oriented, where the distribution companies will invest first and get money later. Further, as reported, according to Singh, the National Tariff Policy would soon be sent to the cabinet for consideration. The power industry is awaiting the policy as a major reform, but it is being opposed by state governments and discoms due to clauses like penalties for load shedding.Contact: Manoj Kumar Singh, Private Secretary, Ministry of Power.Address: Ministry of Power, Room No. 204, 2nd Floor, Shram Shakti Bhawan, Rafi Marg, New Delhi-110 001.Tel: 011-2371 0271.Website: www.powermin.nic.in
