The Department of Space (DoS) has successfully developed and realised an indigenous 10-tonne vertical planetary mixer, marking a major milestone in India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat in Space initiative. This high-capacity mixer is crucial for scaling up the production of solid rocket motors, a key component of India's space transportation system.Developed by Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR, ISRO, in collaboration with Central Manufacturing Technology Institute (CMTI), Bengaluru, the mixer is the world’s largest solid propellant mixing equipment. The system has multiple hydrostatic-driven agitators and is remotely operated via a PLC-based SCADA control system.Key Features of the 10-Tonne MixerHigh-capacity mixing: Processes large batches of solid propellants.Precision & control: Ensures quality and consistency.Safety & reliability: Designed to handle hazardous materials. The 150-ton mixer (5.4m length, 3.3m breadth, 8.7m height) has undergone successful factory acceptance tests and was handed over to SDSC SHAR’s Director by CMTI’s Director in the presence of ISRO Chairman. This achievement underscores India’s growing self-reliance in space technology and manufacturing.
