Smart Cities Council India successfully organised the first in a series of India-wide multicity smart cities workshops in Solapur on June 2, 2017. At this event, the city, selected under the Centre's smart city mission, witnessed a line-up of world-class solution providers.

The cost of NTPC´s Solapur thermal power plant will increase by Rs 500 crore from the earlier estimated about Rs 12,000 crore. However, now it, due to additional compensation sought by the project-affected families.
Maharashtra Government had allotted Rs 440 crore for the expansion of six airports at the district headquarters, which will allow night landing. These include Kolhapur, Solapur, Amravati, Akola, Karhad and Jalgaon. At present, while the expansion for Amravati and Karhad has begun, the six divisional airports will eventually be expanded to 2,300 running metre for night landing.
The Maharashtra Government has received Rs 489 crore to improve the rural road network under the Prime Minister´s Gram Sadak Yojana-II (PMGSY). The Committee meeting that was held recently approved Maharashtra´s proposal for building 829 km length rural roads during the year. Of this, Solapur (126 km), Pune (88 km), Latur (71 km) and Osmanabad (53.35 km) are the largest beneficiary districts.
Chemicals maker Balaji Amines has diversified into the hospitality sector with the launch of a luxury hotel in Solapur, Maharashtra. The company has invested Rs 100 crore to build the five-star hotel, Balaji Sarovar Premier. The hotel, spread over 3 acre with 129 rooms, will be managed by Sarovar Group for 12 years. The company has raised Rs 67 crore through internal accrual for investment in the hotel venture with the rest as bank loan.
