Flying from smaller cities such as Aurangabad, Srinagar and Dehradun is likely to become costlier with the state-owned operator Airports Authority of India (AAI) proposing to levy a user development fee.
The proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport may face cost overruns due to incurring a likely charge of Rs 4,000 per ticket as user development fee, or UDF. The proposed second airport for the Mumbai metropolitan region is being developed as an alternate airport to the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport. Smart cities have been provided some seed money from the Centre and the state, with some to be generated from their own budget. But the financial requirement still remains huge, as a smart city plan has to benefit the entire city and is not just limited to the area identified for development.
