For the proposed Rs 9,000-crore costing 14 km-long twin tunnel project in Kashmir, the Union government is likely to give its approval on October 17. The tunnel, when completed, will become the highest mountain passes in India.
With an objective to deliver all-weather connectivity to the Leh-Ladakh region, the Indian Government is all set to begin the work on Rs 10,050 crore Zojila pass tunnel project. It tops the category of big National Highway Projects in terms of project cost with a tunnel length spanning a length of 14.08 km and approach road of 10.8 km with three vertical ventilation shafts, a snow gallery of 700 m and avalanche protection measures.

The National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) is undertaking the construction, operation and maintenance of the two-lane, bi-directional Zojila Tunnel with parallel escape (egress) tunnel, including approaches on the Srinagar-Leh section connecting NH-1 at 95 km and at 118 km through an EPC contract.

Fresh bids for India’s ambitious tunnel project – the Zojila tunnel – in Jammu and Kashmir has recently been invited by the government. State-run National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) will be accepting contract queries till March 18, and bids for the contract can be thereafter submitted between April 1-8 as per the bid documents.
