Flyover in Kokkata caves in, traffic affected

In Kolkata, the flyover that links Belghoria Expressway with Jessore Road to National Highway 2 and NH 6 was indefinitely closed to traffic on June 11 afternoon after a big chunk of concrete caved in, leaving a gaping hole on the west-bound flank. National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) officials were unwilling to commit on when the expressway would again be opened to traffic. The over 4-metre wide gaping hole was first spotted around 2 pm by the driver of a private car heading towards Dakshineshwar from Birati.

The hole was big enough to cause a major accident. The driver immediately informed the security manning the next checkpost, who in turn alerted cops at the airport police station, situated around 300 metres away. After policemen reached the spot, they stopped any further movement of traffic on the flank and informed the superiors at Bidhannagar commissionerate. Officials of NHAI and public works department were then alerted. After reaching the spot, they carried out an inspection before declaring the indefinite closure.

The flyover has been shut for inspection. It will reopened to traffic only after thorough repairs, the authorities concerned said. The flyover links the four-laned 8 km expressway on the northern suburbs of Kolkata, a key arterial road linking the terminal junction point of NH 2 and NH 6 near Dankuni to Dakshineswar across Nivedita Setu and NH 34 (Jessore Road) near NSCBI Airport.
