Poised to be among the world's longest highway tunnels, the Rohtang Tunnel is a mega project that will put India on the world map. As the Chief Engineer of this project, Colonel NM Chandarana has been at the forefront of this endeavour. Conceived in 1983, the Rohtang Tunnel is all set for completion after seven work-intense years of construction. It connects Manali and Keylong and cuts the distance by nearly 60 km, reducing the travel time by four hours. The tunnel is India's longest, covering a stretch of 8.80 km, and is located at a height of 10,000 ft. Chandarana, along with his team, is also working on a plan with the local government, which will enable the tribal communities in the region to use the tunnel in case of emergencies. Once it begins operations in 2019, it will be open for traffic all year long.
