Building Strong Foundations

Mohini Mehta, Senior Manager & Head  HR, Valecha Engineering Ltd, believes that people are the source of the competitive advantage of an organisation.

Creative innovation, proactive teamwork, foresight, integrity and aggressive performance are the bricks, mortar and cement that go into the building of a strong foundation on which roads of success and solid superstructures are built! With our commitment to the mission of 'building assets for the people; for the nation', Valecha Engineering is dedicated to providing its employees an environment that creates maximum value for all stakeholders. Our policies are based on nurturing and sustaining their diverse talent by striving to adopt and benchmark various global HR best practices.

Recruitment practices include:

  • For new recruitments in critical positions, peers/colleagues are made a part of the interview process as they know best about what would be required of the candidates and the job.
  • Campus recruitment has been institutionalised with the tradition of recruiting young engineering graduates from some of India's leading educational institutes.
  • Lateral recruitment of experienced candidates from the industry is based solely on merit by following a systematic selection process without discrimination.
  • We rely hugely on recruitments by our HR team who understand the culture of the organisation and the requirement of the job and thus ensure the best job fit.

Employee engagement and employee welfare: We believe in connecting with employees to ensure trust and transparency in the organisation. Many employee engagement and welfare activities are regularly conducted.

Internal magazine: HR has institutionalised Urja, an informal internal fortnightly magazine, which started off as an initiative. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that all articles are contributed by employees.

Grievance handling: To provide an environment of trust and support to employees and resolve their grievances, HR has set up a grievance cell where employees can walk in to resolve their problems.

Rewards and recognition: The company recognises and rewards employees for their performance and efforts made for the development of the organisation. To motivate such employees, the company provides incentives, bonus, appreciations and sometimes even surprise gift vouchers.

Learning and development: Various outbound and inhouse technical and soft skills training programmes are conducted for employees. To partner with various educational institutes and colleges, and impart the immense knowledge and experience our senior professionals bring with them, HR has initiated Campus Connect, where senior employees periodically interact with young, aspiring students in various engineering and management institutes for student and faculty development programmes.

Corporate social responsibility: Valecha Engineering Ltd further connects with the people at large for various social causes. We believe in community development and reach out to rural and backward areas. The infrastructure built changes the lives of people living around the areas by providing job opportunities for local residents, generating awareness about future benefits from the development, medical camps, and facilities for workers and local residents.

CSR initiatives:

  • Campus Connect: Under this initiative we arranged an interactive session on managerial skills for the students of Sardar Patel College of Engineering to prepare them to face the challenges of corporate life.
  • Goonj: VEL has tiedup with Goonj, a New Delhi-based NGO to help poor and unprivileged masses of rural India. The company celebrated the 'joy of giving week' from Sept 2329, 2010, wherein all employees contributed clothes, footwear, utensils, stationery, paper, dry ration and cash to the poor.
