Maharashtra is set to auction 40 mine blocks, primarily in Vidarbha, by March 19. The auction process, previously delayed due to the state election code of conduct, is now being expedited.

 

During a review meeting at the divisional commissioner's office in Nagpur, Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik, along with Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) for Mining Iqbal Singh Chahal, emphasised the need to accelerate the process. Divisional Commissioner Vijayalakshmi Bidri confirmed that instructions were issued to fast-track stalled procedures, particularly those requiring government clearance for three iron ore mining blocks in Gadchiroli. 

The performance of the Maharashtra State Mining Corporation (MSMC) was also reviewed, with discussions on enhancing its development in alignment with similar corporations in other states. Saunik stressed adhering to strict timelines to unlock the full potential of the mining sector, which is concentrated in Vidarbha, particularly in the Nagpur division. 

The meeting also addressed integrating mining with district-specific development plans. Districts were directed to identify unique strengths in agriculture, tourism, industry, and natural resources to craft targeted strategies. Nagpur’s proposed one-year development plan, presented by Collector Vipin Itankar, includes initiatives in agriculture, fisheries, skill development, industrial growth, solar energy projects, and establishing medical hubs. 

Saunik highlighted the need to leverage Nagpur’s strong infrastructure, including the international airport and MIHAN, to attract industries. She also suggested partnerships with educational institutions to develop skilled manpower for emerging industries. Additionally, Nagpur’s rise as a tourism and medical hub was emphasised, with calls to enhance cleanliness, beautification, and visitor facilities at tourist spots, monuments, and metro stations.
