BEST Launches 79 New Bus Routes to Boost Metro 3 Connectivity

Mumbai’s public transport network is poised for a major upgrade as the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) Undertaking prepares to implement a comprehensive last-mile connectivity plan for the soon-to-be-operational Metro 3 corridor.

Designed to link Metro stations with key residential and commercial areas in South Mumbai, the plan focuses on easing commuter access along the 33.5 km Metro 3 route, which stretches from Dharavi to Cuffe Parade. The corridor will include 17 stations, covering major locations such as Lower Parel, Worli, Dadar, and Nariman Point. To support this connectivity, BEST has proposed the deployment of 79 buses across 28 routes. These buses will link important areas like Navy Nagar, Colaba, the Gateway of India, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) with nearby Metro stations.

Officials stated that the plan is aimed at overcoming the long-standing issue of inadequate last-mile transit options, which has limited the effectiveness of Mumbai’s metro infrastructure. They emphasized that integrating bus services with metro access points would not only reduce travel time for passengers but also significantly enhance convenience. The BEST and the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) have collaborated closely on this initiative, reflecting a broader strategy of promoting multi-modal public transport systems across the city.

The new routes are expected to reduce road congestion, encourage more people to use public transportation, and help lower carbon emissions — all of which align with Mumbai’s goals for sustainable and inclusive urban development. Authorities expressed optimism about the initiative’s potential, especially for densely populated neighbourhoods that currently lack direct Metro access. The effort is being seen as a key step toward building a more efficient, connected, and environmentally friendly city.
