BioCompute gets Rs 3.1 Mn climate entrepreneurship grant
At the SusCrunch 2024 event hosted by the Sustainability Mafia (SusMafia), BioCompute, a firm harnessing DNA for data storage to reduce emissions from data centres, earned India's highest non-equity climate entrepreneurship grant of Rs 31 lakh. According to a statement from the organisers, the "Big Pie" grant, which is being jointly provided by SusMafia and the Pilani Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Society, intends to advance BioCompute in the worldwide battle against climate change.
Pitch sessions from ten other Indian climate action firms that are profitable and prepared to expand their solutions were held during the government-backed and private sector-supported conference.
Priya Shah, general partner at Theia Ventures, stated that their aim was to catalyse $100 million in investments into Indian climate tech startups by 2030 on behalf of individual and angel syndicate investors. She mentioned this during Theia Ventures' role as the investment partner for SusCrunch 2024.
At the event, Gagan Agarwal, founder of Planet Electric, introduced high-performance electric trucks, and Kuldeep Jain, founder and managing director of CleanMax, provided insights into the development of a large renewable energy company in India.
The summit also celebrated the graduation of the first cohort of SusVentures, a SusMafia programme in collaboration with the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS Pilani), where early-stage climate entrepreneurs receive mentoring. In the inaugural batch, 48 student entrepreneurs from BITS campuses established 14 startups in sectors such as circular economy, energy efficiency, and electric vehicles. The event featured presentations from five student startups mentored by SusMafia: AgriVolt (focused on agri-voltaics for industries), Positive Zero (developing software for sustainable fashion brands), JouleLess (creating wireless IoT devices), and SwiLato (an app aimed at reducing vehicle emissions).
