Breakthrough for BRO in 2.79-km Sungal tunnel along the J-K highway
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) achieved a significant milestone by breaking through the 2.79-km Sungal tunnel along the Jammu-Poonch national highway. Sungal, the second of four tunnels on the strategic national highway 144-A (Golden Arc Road) connecting Akhnoor and Poonch, has achieved the milestone. Earlier, the 700-metre Naushera tunnel achieved the breakthrough on January 28, while tunnelling work inside 260 metre Kandi and 1.1 km Bhimber Gali is in progress.
The BRO chief Lieutenant General Raghu Srinivasan said that both Naushera and the strategically important Sungal tunnels will be completed by the end of this year.
In a related development, Arunachal’s Sela Tunnel has made it to the International Book Of Honour, England. The Sela Tunnel has been officially recognised as the highest tunnel in the country by the International Book.
Taking to his X handle, the Arunachal CM wrote, “I’m so happy to learn that the International Book of Honour, England, has recognised Sela Tunnel as the highest one in the country. This 2.598-km long engineering marvel by @BROindia at an altitude of 13,000 feet on the Tezpur-Tawang road has given a big boost to the ease of connectivity in the strategic region of Arunachal Pradesh.” The Sela Tunnel, the world’s longest twin-lane tunnel, was built to guarantee year-round connectivity to the strategic Tawang Region.
