The Government of India has launched a nationwide cashless treatment scheme that offers medical coverage of up to Rs 1.5 Mn per person, per accident. The benefit applies to all road accident victims involving motor vehicles and must be utilised within seven days of the incident.

As per a notification from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the scheme is available to everyone, regardless of class or category. Victims may receive treatment at designated hospitals under the scheme, while hospitals not listed will only provide stabilisation care as defined by the guidelines.

The National Health Authority (NHA) has been appointed as the implementing agency and will coordinate with police departments, hospitals, and State Health Agencies. Each state and Union Territory will have a State Road Safety Council as the nodal agency to manage implementation within their jurisdiction.

Their responsibilities include onboarding hospitals, coordinating treatments, managing hospital payments, and operating a dedicated portal. A central steering committee will also be established to monitor the scheme’s progress.

The initiative follows a pilot project that commenced on 14 March 2024.
