Chandigarh to get its first plastic waste processing plant
Chandigarh Municipal Corporation is going to get the city's first plastic waste processing plant. At present, the plastic waste generated in the city remains unprocessed and is directly dumped at the Dadu Majra ground, leading to more problems. The reason is that the refuse-derived fuel (RDF) technology at the Sector 25 waste processing plant has remained unsuccessful and is presently non-functional. The Municipal Corporation is considering two models for the plant. One, in which the Municipal Corporation (MC) will only give land to an agency that will install the plant and earn by selling its by-product. Another model will have an equal collaboration between the MC and the agency in all aspects. The site for the plant has not been decided yet. It may be next to the current processing plant area. Today, MC Commissioner Anindita Mitra and the Chief Engineer visited a plastic waste management plant in Surat. Tomorrow, the authorities will visit another plant in Ahmedabad. Following this, they will finally go to Mumbai to witness a horticulture waste processing plant. By the year-end, both the plants will get installed, the MC chief told Chandigarh Tribune. The horticulture waste is also thrown at the dumping ground at present. Mitra said they would require five or six processing plants for better garbage management. The MC has floated a tender for the repair and overhaul of the current solid waste processing plant in Sector 25. Chandigarh produces nearly 550 metric tonnes (mt) of garbage per day, but the waste processing plant in Sector 25 can process only about 120 mt of waste per day.
