Coal India’s April Offtake Declines 1.2% to 63.4 MT

Coal India Limited (CIL), the state-owned coal mining enterprise, reported a 1.2 per cent decline in coal offtake in April 2025. The offtake stood at 63.4 Mn tonnes, down from 64.2 Mn tonnes in the same month last year, according to a regulatory filing. Coal offtake reflects the quantity of coal dispatched from pitheads, including stored inventory.

Meanwhile, coal production in April remained flat. CIL produced 62.1 Mn tonnes of coal during the month, marginally higher than the 61.8 Mn tonnes recorded in April 2024. Coal India continues to contribute over 80 per cent of India’s domestic coal output.

For financial year 2024–25, the company produced 781.1 Mn tonnes of coal, nearly 7 per cent short of its 838 Mn tonne target. Looking ahead, CIL has set a production target of 875 Mn tonnes and an offtake goal of 900 Mn tonnes for 2025–26, reaffirming its pivotal role in India’s power and energy sectors.
