The PMU will oversee a range of initiatives — from traffic upgrades and roadworks to Yamuna clean-up efforts and anti-pollution drives. Staffed by four senior PWD officers, the unit will function full-time, monitoring projects right from the tendering stage through to execution.

The move aims to fix chronic issues like delays, mismanagement, and lack of coordination that often plague civic projects in Delhi. The PMU is also expected to play a key role in supervising air quality-related efforts such as dust suppression, pollution monitoring, and enforcement of anti-smog guidelines.

Apart from infrastructure oversight, the unit will help draft proposals aligned with central schemes and engage with Union government bodies to unlock funding and support under national development programmes.

Importantly, the PMU will operate independently of the recently formed coordination panel led by Delhi PWD minister Parvesh Verma. That committee was created at the PMO’s behest to resolve jurisdictional overlaps and fast-track implementation of the Delhi Master Plan.
