Himachal Partners with ACC Cements to Manage Rural Plastic Waste

The Rural Development Department of Himachal Pradesh has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with ACC Cements Limited to sustainably process non-recyclable plastic waste from rural areas. Under the agreement, waste collected from Gram Panchayats in Bilaspur, Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, and Mandi will be scientifically co-processed using cement kiln technology at ACC’s Barmana plant.

The initiative aims to minimise pollution and eliminate the need for landfilling by treating waste at high temperatures without leaving harmful residues. This partnership supports the state's broader vision of building a clean and green Himachal Pradesh.

The government has emphasised the importance of leveraging industrial partnerships for environmental sustainability. Cement kiln co-processing is recognised as an effective method to dispose of non-recyclable waste responsibly.

Officials stated that the initiative will contribute significantly to long-term environmental protection, reduce landfill dependency, and promote better waste management practices across rural regions.

This collaboration follows earlier agreements signed by the department with Ambuja Cements Limited, UltraTech Cements Limited, and the Healing Himalayas Foundation, reinforcing Himachal Pradesh’s commitment to sustainable waste management solutions.
