India’s total renewable energy installed capacity reached 209.44 GW by December 2024, recording a 15.84% increase from 180.80 GW in December 2023, according to the union ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE). 

The country added 28.64 GW of renewable energy capacity during 2024, a 119.46% rise compared to the 13.05 GW added in the previous year. 

Solar power led the growth, with 24.54 GW added in 2024, raising its cumulative installed capacity by 33.47% from 73.32 GW in December 2023 to 97.86 GW in December 2024. Wind energy contributed an additional 3.42 GW, increasing total wind capacity by 7.64% to 48.16 GW from 44.74 GW in 2023. 

Bioenergy capacity rose by 4.70%, from 10.84 GW in December 2023 to 11.35 GW in December 2024. Small hydro power projects saw a 2.20% growth, with installed capacity increasing to 5.10 GW from 4.99 GW during the same period. 

The MNRE, led by Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, attributed the growth to ongoing efforts to achieve the target of 500 GW renewable energy capacity by 2030, as outlined under India’s ‘Panchamrit’ goals.
