Karnataka to Receive E-Buses Under PM E-Drive Scheme

The Ministry of Heavy Industries has received a formal proposal from the Government of Karnataka requesting the allocation of electric buses under the centrally sponsored PM E-Drive initiative. Karnataka’s Transport Minister, Shri Ramalinga Reddy, submitted the proposal, highlighting the state’s need to bolster urban public transport systems in major cities.

Responding affirmatively, Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, Shri H.D. Kumaraswamy, held discussions with senior ministry officials and assured Karnataka of full support from the Centre. He confirmed that the allocation process is already underway and that Karnataka would receive electric buses in a phased and prioritised manner.

“Karnataka will get all necessary assistance from the Government of India,” said Kumaraswamy. “Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we are reshaping public transport across India. Karnataka will certainly benefit from the PM E-Drive initiative.”

The PM E-Drive scheme aims to deploy 14,028 electric buses across nine major Indian cities, with an overall outlay of Rs 109 billion (Rs 10,900 crore) over two years from 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2026.

Union and state officials have also discussed the complementary infrastructure needed, including charging stations, bus depots, and vehicle maintenance facilities. Various implementation models are under review to ensure swift rollout in key urban clusters.

“This is about more than buses—we are creating a smarter, cleaner, and more inclusive transport future,” Kumaraswamy said. “Minister Ramalinga Reddy has my full support and that of the Ministry.”

The Ministry of Heavy Industries reiterated its commitment to working in close coordination with state governments and all stakeholders to ensure the success of this transformative green mobility mission.
