Manohar Lal Champions Innovation in Urban Transport Planning

Union Minister for Housing & Urban Affairs and Power, Shri Manohar Lal, led a key session on Strengthening Urban Transport during the 17th Civil Services Day celebrations in New Delhi. Addressing young officers, the Minister called for innovative and out-of-the-box thinking to address the challenges of urban mobility.

He underlined the significance of Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), advocating for seamless last-mile connectivity from metros and public buses—affordable, integrated, and enabled by user-friendly digital payment systems.

The Minister further encouraged urban planners to adopt the “walk-to-work” concept by designing residential areas in close proximity to workplaces. He stressed that this principle should be extended to government housing developments as well, fostering sustainable and efficient urban growth.

Shri Manohar Lal urged civil servants to become transformative leaders who drive solutions and champion inclusive, citizen-focused urban planning. He envisioned India’s cities evolving into engines of growth and models of environmental sustainability.

In a moment of distinction for the Ministry, Shri Srinivas Katikithala, Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, was conferred the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration for the effective execution of the PM Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) scheme.
