Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma held a meeting on Thursday with Northeast Frontier Railway (Construction) General Manager A.K. Chaudhary and senior railway officials to discuss the proposed extension of railway tracks to the southern regions of the state and finalise plans for the inauguration of the Bairabi–Sairang railway line and Sairang station.

Lalduhoma suggested that the planned railway line to Lawngtlai district pass through Thenzawl in Serchhip district, which has been designated as the site for a proposed "peace city" expected to accommodate 10 to 15 million people. He also recommended establishing a railway station close to the town and requested NF Railway to prioritise the area in its preliminary survey.

In response, Chaudhary assured that the route via Thenzawl would be considered and that feedback would be shared by October.

Though the railway line is technically ready for inauguration, the Centre is likely to wait until a secondary maintenance facility at Sairang station is completed, which may take another month.

The Chief Minister informed officials that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited to inaugurate the 51.38 km Bairabi–Sairang railway line and Sairang station. He requested preparations begin immediately, including assigning a suitable inauguration venue and arranging special coaches and helicopter landing zones at Hortoki and Mualkhang, should the PM confirm his visit.

A review meeting has been proposed for 19 August to assess readiness.

The project, commissioned by the Northeast Frontier Railway after safety clearance in June, is part of the Centre’s Act East policy and aims to boost connectivity and regional integration. Construction of the line began in 2015.
