Mumbai’s Orange Gate–Marine Drive Tunnel Project Nears Completion
The double tunnel project connecting Orange Gate to Marine Drive in Mumbai—designed to ease traffic congestion and improve east–west connectivity—has reached its concluding phase.
This monumental initiative, valued at Rs 77.65 billion, is set to provide substantial relief to the city's traffic woes by significantly reducing travel time between the eastern and western corridors of Mumbai.
In anticipation of possible congestion around Marine Drive upon the project’s completion, the municipal corporation has proposed a six-lane, 3-kilometre road stretching between the Coastal Road and the NCPA. Authorities are confident this additional infrastructure will ease the traffic burden in the area.
Once operational, the tunnel will allow commuters to travel from the southern end of the Eastern Expressway to Marine Drive in merely 10 minutes, benefiting an estimated 80,000 vehicles each day. Of the total 9.23-kilometre stretch, 6.52 kilometres comprise double tunnels.
