New Flyover to Shadow Metro Line 5, Extension to Ambernath

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced a flyover that will run alongside the underground Thane–Bhiwandi–Kalyan Metro Line 5, aiming to relieve persistent congestion on this busy corridor. The new structure will be delivered in tandem with an east–west road widening programme, ensuring road capacity keeps pace with the railway upgrade.
At the same time, Metro Line 5 is to be extended beyond Kalyan to serve Ulhasnagar and Chikhloli near Ambernath, giving the district’s rapidly expanding communities a faster, more reliable public transport link. Officials said that the combined impact of the metro, flyover and wider road network will spur Bhiwandi’s freight led economy and support residential growth across Thane district.
The Chief Minister has directed agencies to expedite land acquisition and design so that construction can commence swiftly and “meet the pressing demands of commuters”. The Kalyan–Bhiwandi metro corridor is already under way, addressing rising demand from both passengers and the thriving logistics sector.
Separately, Mumbai’s long awaited Santacruz–Chembur Link Road (SCLR) extension is on course to open in July. The final cable stayed arm crosses the Western Express Highway at a right angle and will eliminate detours via Vakola and Hans Bhugra Marg, providing a seamless east–west connection across the city.
