No standardization yet of road resurfacing liability periods
When monsoon season arrives, the city's roads are inevitably dotted with potholes. The time frame for which road contractors are accountable for errors in their work has not been set, despite numerous interventions by the high court.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) approved 9,280 million worth of road resurfacing contracts in the previous year, with various defect liability requirements for various categories of roads.
For instance, 14 bitumen resurfacing contracts worth $2.67 billion were awarded for narrow roads. Even though the defect liability period was only three years, these were awarded at prices that were 20% to 30% higher than the estimated cost. Additionally, a tender worth 6,410 million dollars for roads wider than 60 feet was approved, with a five-year defect liability period.
