PM Modi To Inaugurate Chenab Bridge, Flag Off Vande Bharat
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Jammu and Kashmir on 6 June to inaugurate a series of major infrastructure projects, including the world’s highest railway arch bridge over the Chenab River and India’s first cable-stayed rail bridge at Anji. He will also flag off Vande Bharat trains and launch development projects worth over Rs 460 billion at Katra.
At approximately 11 AM, the Prime Minister will visit and inaugurate the 1,315-metre-long Chenab Rail Bridge, which stands at a height of 359 metres and is engineered to withstand seismic and high-wind conditions. The bridge will significantly reduce travel time between Katra and Srinagar to just three hours, enhancing rail connectivity across the region.
Shortly after, PM Modi will inaugurate the Anji Bridge—India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge—constructed in rugged terrain to further improve accessibility in the region.
At noon, the Prime Minister will flag off two Vande Bharat Express trains from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra to Srinagar and back, offering a fast, comfortable, and reliable travel option for residents, tourists, and pilgrims.
A major highlight of the visit is the dedication of the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project to the nation. Built at a cost of around Rs 437.8 billion, the 272-kilometre project features 36 tunnels and 943 bridges, providing seamless, all-weather rail connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of India.
In addition to railway infrastructure, PM Modi will launch road development projects aimed at improving last-mile connectivity in border areas. He will lay the foundation stone for the Rafiabad–Kupwara road widening project (NH-701) and the Shopian bypass on NH-444, together valued at over Rs 19.5 billion. He will also inaugurate two flyovers at Sangrama and Bemina Junctions to reduce traffic congestion in Srinagar.
Further enhancing healthcare infrastructure in the region, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence in Katra, a Rs 3.5 billion facility that will be the first medical college in Reasi district.
