Shillong Airport Expansion Begins Soon
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has officially issued a tender notice for the expansion of Shillong Airport at Umroi in Meghalaya, marking a significant step in enhancing air connectivity in Northeast India.
This project includes the construction of a modern terminal building, expansion of apron and taxiways, and supporting infrastructure aimed at meeting the future traffic demands of the region. The total cost of the proposed expansion is estimated to be over Rs 1.80 billion.
The new terminal is expected to handle up to 600 passengers during peak hours, greatly improving passenger experience and operational efficiency. The expansion is also crucial for accommodating larger aircraft, with proposals to extend the runway to 2,400 metres, pending environmental clearance.
The move is part of a broader plan to promote regional connectivity and boost tourism in Meghalaya and nearby states. Once completed, Shillong Airport is expected to become a key hub in the Northeast, easing travel and encouraging economic development.
This development aligns with India’s UDAN scheme, aiming to make air travel accessible while strengthening infrastructure in remote areas.
