South Western Railway Launches Rs 550M Converged Communication System
South Western Railway (SWR) has initiated the installation of a cutting-edge Converged Communication System (CCS), marking its debut on the Indian Railways network. This Rs 550 million project integrates voice, video, and data services into one platform, aimed at transforming operational communication and security systems.
The new system will ensure seamless, secure communication across stations, trains, and operational centres. A key feature of the CCS is the deployment of a state-of-the-art Video Surveillance System (VSS) across 228 railway stations. Of these, 14 A and B category stations are funded under the Nirbhaya Fund, while the remaining 214 stations are supported through capital expenditure.
The VSS includes 2,784 high-definition cameras, ranging from Full HD Bullet and Dome cameras to 4K Ultra HD Bullet and Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) cameras, placed at critical locations. These cameras feature AI-driven technologies such as Face Recognition Systems (FRS), Video Analytics (VA), and a Centralised Video Management System (VMS). All data captured is monitored through Integrated Command and Control Centres (ICCC) at both divisional and zonal levels.
SWR is transitioning from the older Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) technology to a more efficient, scalable system. This upgrade allows dynamic routing and better bandwidth utilisation, catering to the growing communication needs of Indian Railways.
The new AI-powered CCTV system uses machine learning algorithms to detect specific events, such as unusual motion, lighting changes, and even potential security threats like loitering or someone collapsing.
The Mysuru Division has already commissioned CCTV systems at 31 stations and established an Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), along with a Divisional Network Operations Centre (NOC). Additionally, a VoIP-based Train Control Communication System (TCCS) is now fully operational at 71 stations in the division.
With successful security audits completed at key stations like Mysuru, Pandavapura, and Mandya, SWR is on track to complete the zone-wide deployment of the CCS by September 2025.
