Train Services Set to Begin Soon Between Salt Lake Sector V and Howrah
The Ministry of Railways is accelerating efforts to commence train operations on the Kolkata Metro’s Green Line, which spans from Salt Lake Sector V to Howrah Maidan. Once operational, this corridor will establish direct connectivity between Sealdah and Howrah, marking a significant advancement in the city’s transportation infrastructure. This development will integrate two major railway terminals within the country’s oldest metro network for the first time.
A recent milestone in this process was the inspection conducted by Sumeet Singhal, Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) for the NF Circle. He carried out a detailed review of the Esplanade–Sealdah stretch, examining essential components such as track and tunnel integrity, the ventilation system, train operation protocols, and emergency preparedness measures. This inspection is a crucial prerequisite before any new metro segment is opened for public use.
Currently, the Green Line—also known as the East-West Metro—comprises two segments: Green Line-1, which runs from Salt Lake Sector V to Sealdah, and Green Line-2, stretching from Esplanade to Howrah Maidan. The upcoming launch of the Sealdah–Esplanade segment is expected to be a key milestone in modernising Kolkata’s metro system, significantly improving urban connectivity. It will enable faster, more convenient travel between Howrah Maidan and Salt Lake Sector V, fulfilling a long-standing demand of daily commuters and boosting public transport efficiency in the city.
