Work Begins on 400-metre Urapakkam–Vandalur Railway Line
Southern Railway has commenced work on laying a 400-metre railway track between Urapakkam and Vandalur, as part of the Kilambakkam railway station development project. The initiative involves the construction of an island platform to serve commuters on the Chengalpattu–Tambaram route.
Once the new track is in place, the existing third line—currently operational for Tambaram-bound services—will be dismantled. This will make way for the new island platform to be positioned between the existing second track and the freshly laid line, enabling passengers to board and alight from trains on both sides.
According to railway officials, the new track represents a realignment of the existing third line. In parallel, a side platform along the first track for Chengalpattu-bound services from Tambaram has already seen 60% completion.
Upon full completion, Kilambakkam station will feature three platforms, each accommodating 12-car EMU (Electrical Multiple Unit) trains. A senior official from the Chennai Division stated, “The newly laid line will reconnect with the current third track near the service road under the Road Over Bridge at the Otteri extension towards Vandalur, and near Chelliamman Temple towards Urapakkam.”
The infrastructure upgrade is expected to significantly ease passenger movement and improve operational efficiency on this vital suburban route.
